Chapter Eleven

Seeing You Again Soon

T

he coffee shop is the halfway mark of our run, so we are headed back toward my apartment. Brad’s so quiet. I mean, the whole running thing kind of makes it hard to talk, but he seems too quiet. I look over to him, and he is sweating way too much, lots more than I do. He’s in better shape than me. So I reach over to him, take his hand, and pull him to a stop. I ask him, “What’s wrong?”

He doesn’t answer. Something is wrong; he must be sick. We are near the park close to my apartment. I take him to a bench, and we sit. He doesn’t even talk; he wraps his arms loosely around my waist to keep himself from falling. I’m frantic; I wipe the sweat from his forehead with my towel. He’s sweating too much; he was fine just a minute ago. I look in his eyes; he can hardly keep them open.

I almost yell, “Brad, what’s wrong? Talk to me!”

He doesn’t seem to hear me. He doesn’t say anything. He’s just looking into my eyes.

I plead, “Please, Brad, what’s wrong?”

Brad pauses like he is trying to find his breath. Then he whispers, “I…think…I’ve been…poisoned.”

Brad’s head is now leaning on my shoulder; it looks like he is going to pass out. I get my phone out, and I call 911. I get an answer and tell them I think my boyfriend has been poisoned and where we are. They say they are on their way and to stay where we are; they can track us by my phone, so I keep it on. I’ve got to call Trish.

I am telling Brad to hold on, that I love him, and that help is coming. He’s sliding off the bench; he’s too heavy for me to hold him there, so I slide down with him, keeping my arms under his shoulder so his head doesn’t hit the bench or the ground. I can’t believe this is happening. I am rocking him to my chest while I am texting Trish with the other hand. I have to tell her we are at the park and that someone has poisoned Brad. I tell her I called 911. I also want her to know that the new girl at the coffee shop might have put something in Brad’s protein drink, but I don’t get to finish because I am crying so hard that I don’t see the man who comes over to me. He leans over and pulls me up by my shoulders, and Brad slides off my lap to the grass.

The man—do I know him? He’s coming to help. I try to pull away. I tell him to take Brad; he needs help. He pulls me closer to his face and looks into my eyes. He says, “I told you I would be seeing you soon.”

Before I could scream, he puts a cloth over my nose and mouth, and everything turns black.

Brad
